Sculpture    |    Fossil Topographies        Forms, series 2        Forms, series 1        Still Life Shelf Series        Spoons

Spoons

explores the relationship of objects to memory, experience and culture.  The work consists of a series of carved redwood and willow, long handled spoons and related utensils, ranging in height from 4-8 ft.  They are primordial in nature, appearing in pairs, small groupings, or larger installations.  Their verticality alludes to agricultural plantings and the human form; they become icons in a very minimal way.  They reference our primal relationship to food, in gathering, preparation, manners and customs.  Their elongation questions their implicit practicality, speaking to the aesthetic.  They invoke the spiritual and symbolic with a rich historical context that spans diverse cultures over thousands of years.
