I'm currently collecting materials for a video project related to transformations. I've just returned from a week hiking in the desert of Joshua Tree National Park amongst rather amazing rock formations and spring wildflowers (thanks to rain this year!). Hiking back into the Wonderland of Rocks I noticed sections of bushes covered with tent caterpillars, the larvae living and feeding in colonies, enlarging the tent as they grow. When not feeding they remain inside the tent which they use as shelter, protection, and molting site, a temporary home until they are large enough to feed on their own as solitary feeders, before creating silken cocoons spun on branches for their final transformation into moths.
